Supervision is crucial to the practice of professional therapists. It is a valuable "checking in" procedure, supporting therapists to stay poised, maintain both professional and personal boundaries, avoid "burnout" and thus provide safe, ethical and competent therapeutic sessions for all clients.
I am expected to have a minimum of 90 minutes supervision every month.
The NCPS defines CPD as:
'A range of learning activities through which professional counsellors grow and develop throughout their careers to ensure that they retain their ability to practise safely, ethically and legally within their evolving scope of practice.'
I am expected to complete a minimum of 30 hours CPD annually. My clients needs guide my choice of CPD via resources like seminars, conferences workshops, e-learning, mentoring, research, writing articles, reading, work shadowing, and specialist groups.
As part of my commitment to my client work, I continue to have regular check ins with my own personal therapist.
Understanding my own responses, biases and relational patters is vital to enhance my own self-awareness and to support my well-being.
This means I can keep my boundaries between personal and professional well-defined and resilient.
Therefore I avoid potential blind spots that could hinder any client interactions, keeping the focus solely on you during your sessions.
